For years EA has sat back and watched Aqua Ultraviolet make hideous claim after hideous claim, from their self-proclaimed title “The Industry Leader” to over-rating their equipment. In 2005 they crossed the line and posted a bogus UV equipment comparison between their equipment and ours. Here is the truth.

Now EA is BLOWING the WHISTLE!
...on Aqua Ultraviolet—the HYPE LEADER.
Simply scroll down to see the Truth
for each example of their HYPE.

At Aqua Ultraviolet, as with any successful business, competitors will attempt to mimic your products. While the old adage states “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” some of our competitors marketing claims have unfairly maligned our products and distorted the facts.

If you follow our competitor’s information then our units shouldn’t work at all, we wouldn’t even be in business, and yet we are number #1 year after year. Aqua Ultraviolet designs, tests and brings to market innovative products each year while our competitors criticize, then copy us.

We sympathize with the competition, how can they possibly market against the best? By making misleading claims about lamp performance, ultraviolet exposure, and chamber design, they are basically creating propaganda.

UV Detective blowing whistle on Aqua UV Rhetoric!
EA Rebuttal

We're assuming that Aqua Ultraviolet is referring to Emperor Aquatics, Inc. with these rhetoric statements.

The truth is…Aqua Ultraviolet mimics EA information and product design! A few years ago they copied our “Remote Power Supply” design. As for their equipment performance…EA knows that Aqua Ultraviolet grossly overstates their equipment's capacity as shown HERE: UV Comparison.

What organization voted them #1 and for what? Anyone can make generalized claims like this! Ask them to prove it.

Misleading claims… Every statement EA makes is fact and can be proven; otherwise we wouldn’t print it. And, as always, we will gladly back-up our claims when asked.
Can you say the same about Aqua Ultraviolet?

"Bogus" Aqua Ultraviolet Testing
 Aqua UV Rhetoric

What is this all about?
This is a direct comparison that evaluates the differences between Aqua Ultraviolet and our competitor’s lamp performance, ultraviolet exposure, and chamber design.

Nowhere, does our competitor state where or if they do any testing, their claims are all theory with no practical application.

Our competitor is trying to refute our testing by stating that their housing is larger and the numbers differ because the radiometer was placed so much further away. In reality there is only .5 inch difference in the housing size between the Aqua Ultraviolet Unit and theirs. However, in comparison, there is far more Ultraviolet output in the Aqua Ultraviolet Unit.

UV Detective blowing whistle on Aqua UV Rhetoric!

EA Rebuttal

Aqua Ultraviolet admits there is a sensing probe distance difference of .5” between their 2” diameter UV housing and our 3” housing. However, Aqua Ultraviolet attempts to down-play the .5”variation as if it’s not important…on the contrary, this distance is absolutely critical and coincides with the variance between the two readings.

Aqua Ultraviolet acquired the services of what is allegedly a testing laboratory (BioVir Laboratories, Inc.) to conduct a misguided UV intensity test between EA and Aqua Ultraviolet UV equipment. Obviously, in an effort to protect themselves, BioVir Laboratories, Inc. states on their test result document that they “followed Aqua Ultraviolet’s testing instructions”.

In fact, Aqua Ultraviolet created this "so-called" UV intensity test, and then instructed BioVir Laboratories, Inc. to perform it. The truth is, this test is not recognized by any authoritative organization!

The Industry Standard...The Black Box Test.

The Accepted industry UV Intensity Measurement Test is as follows:
1. The UV Lamp is suspended inside a black box (to eliminate reflection).
2. The UV sensor is placed at a distance of one meter from the centerline
of the lamp (to measure entire arc length).

3. Measurements are to be made in ambient air of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. The lamp is run for 100 hours and then a measurement is taken.

What the Black Box Test Achieves
1. Accurate representation of the lamp's UV-C output due to the sensing probe considering the entire arc length of the lamp.
2. Test results are not influenced by fluctuating temperatures and represent a temperature standard.

Emperor Aquatics, Inc., a member of IUVA (International Ultraviolet Association), uses the Bolton Photosciences, Inc. "UV Modeling Program" to engineer all of our UV equipment. James R. Bolton Ph.D. developed the "UV Modeling Program", the same program used in the EPA's Ultraviolet Guidance Manual (EPA 815-D-03-007/June 2003) to demonstrate UV reactor effective dosage rates.

Lamp Length & Output...
 Aqua UV Rhetoric

At Aqua Ultraviolet, we chose to use ozone-emitting lamps after thorough testing with a radiometer, used to measure UV output (though we do offer a ozone free lamp if requested). Our lamps are designed for 14 months of continuous use, we calculate our flow rates at 30,000 µw/cm² , based on the end of useful lamp life. Since we have calculated our flow rates based on the end of lamp life, there is no need to adjust the flow rates during life cycle of your lamp. Aqua Ultraviolet’s unit will perform at its optimum through out the life of the lamp and it just makes it simple.

Why are our flows so much more then our competitors? Because our units out perform our competitors hands down. Your water will not be green for very long, from over night to 3 to 5 days you will have crystal clear water.

Our Competitor says that a longer lamp is more effective, however their own product line contradicts this statement. For example, their 25 Watt lamp is the same length as their 50 Watt lamp and they publish them at entirely different flow rates, how can that be? At Aqua Ultraviolet, we know that lamp length in itself doesn't determine effectiveness, what does is the measurable UV output of the lamp. As an example, our new 400-Watt lamp, is only 4” longs and run circles around lamps that are 20 times its size.

OZONE-EMITTING LAMPS
Aqua Ultraviolet chooses to use ozone-emitting UV lamps while E.A. c
hooses not to.

Here’s why.

The photo to the right shows an Aqua Ultraviolet ozone-emitting lamp and quartz sleeve, used with their equipment after 5 months of operation. Notice the white chalky residue, a nitrogen by-product that accumulates on the lamp's glass envelope. This residue absorbs UV-C light, decreasing the effectiveness of their equipment.

Aqua Ultraviolet ozone-emitting uv lamps

USEFUL LAMP LIFE
Aqua Ultraviolet has always tried to “one up" us regarding lamp life by promoting their lamps lasting 14 months. The truth is, there’s no difference between E.A. lamps and Aqua Ultraviolet lamps of the same style (T5), other than blue end-caps and E.A.'s non-ozone emitting lamp coating.

LAMP LENGTH
The E.A. 25 watt lamp operates at 425 milliamps while our 50 watt high output lamp operates at 800 milliamps. Yes, both lamps are identical in length however, their Input Watt / UV-C Output Watt conversion is different (25 watts = 8 UV-C output watts / 50 watts = 16 UV-C output watts). Due to the increase in UV-C Output, our 50 Watt SMART HO UV features a 5” in diameter UV housing and is accompanied by a flow-rate representing this 5” diameter.

UV Detective blowing whistle on Aqua UV Rhetoric!
EA has printed literature dating back to the early 1990’s stating that Medium-Pressure UV lamps convert at best only 8% of their initial Input Watts into useful UV-C Output Watts (400 Input Watts = 32 UV-C Output Watts). EA does not use these lamps because of their high cost, high operating temperature, poor germicidal UV-C Output and short life.
   Aqua UV Rhetoric
UV Detective blowing whistle on Aqua UV Rhetoric!
Aqua Ultraviolet first introduced the 100-watt and 200-watt lamps in the 90's, at the time our competitor stance was, that it was impossible, those types of lamps do not exist. After seeing Aqua Ultraviolet's success with these products our competitor now sells 120, 150, and 200-Watt lamps.

EA Rebuttal
EA tested Amalgam lamps almost ten years ago and was not impressed with their dependability, hence, implemented the T6 High Output lamp into our product line. Today, EA continues to choose T6 lamps that deliver the same UV-C output, but cost less than the Amalgam lamps.

Aqua Ultraviolet's Deceptive Graph

Aqua Ultraviolet's Deceptive Graph. UV Detective blowing whistle on Aqua UV Rhetoric!

Only UV-C light (250 - 280 nanometers) is effective at destroying living microorganisms.

Compare the Aqua Ultraviolet graph to the Bolton Photosciences, Inc. UV wavelength Graph. The Aqua Ultraviolet graph conceals the fact that the bulk of UV output of a medium-pressure UV lamp exceeds 300 nanometers (outside the Germicidal Action Curve)
and is useless at destroying living waterborne microorganisms.

The Bolton Photosciences, Inc. UV Wavelength Graph represents the industry standard regarding low- pressure (38%) and medium-pressure (8%) UV-C output from initial input watts.

The result: When considering true germicidal value, low-pressure UV lamps are more efficient
when compared to medium-pressure lamps.

Aqua Ultraviolet conveniently did not show this portion of the Medium-Pressure Lamps curve.

Real Science
 Aqua UV Rhetoric

Our competitor continually quotes this manual as if it were written for the backyard pond environment. In reality it was written for drinking water treatment and is only a draft (The last actual manual is over 16 years old).

First, we would like to start by giving you the link to the EPA ™ Manual, so you can see for yourself:

EPA ™ Disenfection Manual (in pdf format)

Now here are a few facts about this manual:

1. This manual is a guide for drinking water sterilization.
2. Only a very small portion of (11 pages of 478) this manual deals with unfiltered, ground water systems.

Why should this concern you?

The manual doesn’t address issues that actually concern a backyard pond or aquarium environment. In ALL of its calculations it fails to take into consideration factors such as: Fish Load, Feeding, Pond Size, Photosynthesis, Fish Waste, Plant Coverage, Inadequate Filtration (of course not our Ultima II Filter), and most of all the time involved to maintain your water feature.

At Aqua Ultraviolet, to confirm what we already knew, we sent this email to the EPA ™ :

AUV Q: “….. My question is, is this manual for a pond environment, drinking water or just information about UV in general? Can it be used for this or do you have a specific manual that pertains more closely to a backyard pond environment?”

The following information was obtained from Daniel C. Schmelling, Ph.D., of the EPA ™:

EPA ™ A: “To cite the first sentence from the cover letter in the DRAFT UV Disinfection Guidance Manual you reference: "The purpose of this guidance manual, when finalized, is solely to provide technical information on the application of ultraviolet light for the disinfection of drinking water by public water systems." Re your question – this manual was not written to address the cleaning of backyard ponds. I am not aware of any EPA ™ guidance that addresses pond maintenance. However, you might contact the OW [] resource Center as shown below regarding this matter.”

UV Detective holding Bolton Handbook and EPA Manual.
EPA Ultraviolet Guidence Manual (EPA 815-D-03-007 / June 2003)
Bolton Photosciences Inc. Ultraviolet Applications Handbook
EA Rebuttal
After reading Aqua Ultraviolet’s website information, EA spoke with Dr. Daniel C. Schmelling of the EPA
regarding the EPA Guidance Manual and his response
was: "The manual's objective is to target drinking water
due to its regulation." He continued with "The
EPA does not regulate pond water, however, the
information contained in the manual is universal and
could be used to design UV equipment for any application."

The engineering information found in both of the above publications addresses specific ultraviolet characteristics, among them are defining lamp array, UV-C output and UV transmittance through water. It is this information that is required to establish UV equipment capacity. Regardless of the manufacturer's name or claims, this information applies to all UV equipment.

E.A. uses this critical UV performance information to establish the capacity of our UV equipment. E.A. applies it to aquatic applications within the business
markets we target (Public Aquarium, Zoo, Fish Farming, Water Features). Specific applications require close consideration of critical factors that are specific to water temperature, targeted waterborne microorganism UV exposure rate and UV transmittance.

The ability to apply and share this information has helped build our strong reputation and it's why more professionals contact EA than Aqua Ultraviolet.

"GREEN WATER" Flow Rates
 Aqua UV Rhetoric
The "Green Water" sizing information is fictional, there is no such thing as "Green Water Flowrate" in the EPA™ Manual. Our competitor's formula is based on some imaginary variables that they created.

• Excerpt, word for word, from: www.aquaultraviolet.com/epainfo.php

EA Rebuttal
The term “Green Water” Flow Rate was created by E.A. and signifies that our SMART UV flow
rates consider water conditions that are found in a pond during an algae bloom.
What separates EA from UV competitors whom target the water garden market, is our flow rate information. For example, compare flow rates between our 25 Watt SMART UV Sterilizer and the Aqua Ultraviolet's 25 Watt model (shown on the right.)

"Green Water" flow rate bar graph.

Aqua Ultraviolet criticizes us for creating "Green Water" rates; they claim that this information is fictional... you be the judge.
